Real Dogs · Real Household Friction

You love your dog unconditionally. That doesn't mean life with them should feel like an exhausting battle.

When your dog lunges at another dog, guards a chew toy, or shreds your pant legs at 7 PM, they aren't 'trying to be dominant.' Their biological nervous system is redlining over threshold. We skip the outdated dominance myths and give you immediate, practical relief.

Why Our Method Works Where Others Fail

Veterinary science credentials. Champion performance training. Zero guesswork.

Most trainers rely on anecdotal tricks or punitive tools that mask symptoms. Carolyn's approach is grounded in academic veterinary science, applied behavioral learning theory, and more than two decades of developing high-stakes champion animals.

Led by Carolyn Sabolis-Hall

Animal Science & Vet Tech Degree

B.S. in Large and Small Animal Science with a Veterinary Technician concentration from Cazenovia College. Carolyn evaluates the whole organism—distinguishing behavioral stress from underlying orthopedic discomfort, chronic pain, or neurological fatigue.

20+ Years Training Champion Athletes

Two decades preparing world-class equine athletes across Olympic disciplines (dressage, show jumping, eventing) where a split-second of miscommunication is dangerous. She brings that exact Olympic-grade marker precision to your family dog.

Surgical Observation & USHJA Judging

Certified USHJA judging demands micro-second evaluation of movement, biomechanics, stress cues, and subtle tension. Carolyn spots micro-signals of canine arousal before barking or lunging ever begins.

Elite Human Coaching & Instruction

Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) & 4-H leadership background means Carolyn trains YOU with empathy and clarity. Complex behavioral science is broken down into clean, repeatable drills anyone in the family can execute.

Targeted Coaching Tracks

Training designed around your real life—not an unrealistic obedience drill.

Every dog has a unique learning history and emotional threshold. We combine canine behavior science with empowering human coaching so you master the exact mechanics to succeed without us.

Applied Behavioral Science · Handler Training Lab

The 4-Stage Canine Reliability Ladder & Handler Timing Lab

Dogs don't fail to listen because they are stubborn—they struggle when asked to perform above their current biological threshold of arousal and distraction. Check off the skills your dog has mastered to calculate your current fluency rank, or test your own handler reaction speed below!

Readiness Score: 0% · Living Room Baseline 🦴 0 Treats Earned
Stage 1 · Low Distraction

Living Room Baseline

Building voluntary engagement, marker understanding, and core emotional regulation inside a calm home environment.

Stage 2 · Moderate Distraction

Household Boundaries

Transferring living room fluency to high-friction household thresholds where impulses naturally spike.

Stage 3 · Outdoor Distraction

30ft Line & Slack Leash

Introducing open spaces and natural environmental triggers using long lines and precise handler mechanics.

Stage 4 · Real-World Neutrality

Generalization & Neutrality

Achieving calm social indifference in busy public environments and low-stress cooperation during vet care.

Interactive Handler Mechanics

The 1.5-Second Clicker Timing Drill

In animal learning theory, a dog associates a bridge marker ("click!" or "YES!") only with the exact microsecond of behavior happening within 1.5 seconds. If you mark too late, you mark looking away or sniffing the grass. Test your handler reaction speed below!

Neurobiology & Applied Learning Lab

Interactive Reactivity & Threshold Distance Simulator

A dog who is barking and lunging at 5 feet isn't "stubborn"—their nervous system is flooding with adrenaline and cortisol. In applied behavior analysis, learning only happens under threshold. Drag the slider below to explore how distance changes your dog's brain chemistry in real time!

Need a customized starting point for your dog's current threshold?

Take the 2-Minute Diagnostic Below ↓

Two-minute fit check

Find a sensible place to begin.

You do not need to diagnose your dog. Answer three practical questions and we’ll suggest a starting point to discuss.

1. How old is your dog?
2. What is the biggest concern right now?
3. Which format feels most practical?

Our approach

Kind to dogs. Clear for people.

Reward-based training is more than handing out treats. It means arranging learning so the dog can succeed, reinforcing useful choices, changing the environment when needed, and paying attention to stress, health, and individual preferences.

Our LIMA-oriented decision making starts with the least intrusive, minimally aversive options likely to help. We explain recommendations, monitor your dog’s response, and change course when the plan is not supporting learning or welfare.

What this feels like as a client

  • You understand what to practice and why it matters.
  • Your dog gets enough distance, breaks, and choice to learn.
  • Homework is broken into realistic, observable steps.
  • Safety and management are treated as skills—not failures.
  • Veterinary or specialist input is recommended when appropriate.

A practical process

From “what do we do?” to a plan you can use.

Training works best when the next step is clear, small enough to practice, and relevant to daily life.

Tell us what is happening

Share your goals, routines, context, and any immediate safety concerns.

Choose the right starting point

We match the concern to an appropriate service or referral rather than forcing a package.

Learn and practice together

You receive coaching, demonstrations, and steps that fit your dog and household.

Adjust with support

We review what changed, troubleshoot barriers, and build on meaningful progress.

The Just A Pup Training Promise

Care is part of the method.

Dogs and people deserve training that is understandable, respectful, and honest about what change requires.

  • We will not shame you or your dog.
  • We will explain every recommendation.
  • We will watch for stress, fatigue, pain, and fear.
  • We will use management to prevent rehearsal and protect safety.
  • We will stay within our professional scope.
  • We will refer when veterinary or specialist care is the better next step.
  • We will not guarantee outcomes for a living animal.
  • We will celebrate progress that improves daily life.

Real-life progress

Success is more useful than perfection.

Meaningful change may look like a dog recovering faster, choosing to check in, tolerating a shorter handling session, or completing a walk with a plan the family can repeat.

More predictable days

Routines, management, and shared cues reduce guesswork for everyone in the household.

Clearer communication

You learn what to notice, what to reinforce, and how to make the desired choice easier.

Greater confidence

Training supports both the dog’s ability to cope and the guardian’s ability to respond thoughtfully.

Common questions

Before you take the next step.

Does reward-based mean my dog will need treats forever?

Food is one useful reinforcer, not the only one. As a skill becomes fluent, reinforcement can become more varied and less frequent. Real-life rewards—access, play, movement, sniffing, attention, and safety—can all matter.

What does LIMA-oriented mean?

LIMA stands for Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive. We use it as a decision-making framework: begin with humane, low-intrusion strategies, consider the whole dog and environment, monitor outcomes, and avoid escalating simply because a behavior is inconvenient.

Can you help if my dog has bitten someone?

Disclose any bite history in the inquiry. We will consider immediate safety, context, severity, and whether the case fits our scope. Some situations require veterinary involvement, a veterinary behaviorist, or another specialist before or alongside training.

Will I be judged for what I have already tried?

No. Behavior is information, and people make choices using the information available to them. Our job is to understand what is happening now and build a practical, respectful way forward.

Do you guarantee results?

No ethical trainer can guarantee a specific outcome for a living animal. We can promise clear communication, thoughtful planning, humane methods, honest scope, and adjustments based on observed progress.
